02 / Start

From install to first edit.

The official intro is a short loop: install, write project rules, connect a model, then switch Plan and Build.

  1. 1. Install a desktop or CLI build from the download page. Current release is v1.18.31 for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  2. 2. Run opencode in a project, then /init to write AGENTS.md. Commit that file so later sessions see the same rules.
  3. 3. Use /connect to add a provider key, or sign in to Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or Zen. Free models work without an account.
  4. 4. Attach files with @. Plan proposes work with edit and bash on ask or deny. Build is the default agent with tools on.
03 / Surfaces

Three surfaces, one agent.

“Any editor” means a terminal interface, a desktop app, and an IDE extension. The terminal is still the default install path.

Terminal

Default path. Theme and keybinds live in tui.json. Runtime config lives in opencode.json. They are not the same file.

Desktop

Tabs for active sessions on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Windows needs WebView2. A blank window is usually that runtime. Signed since v1.3.4.

IDE extension

Same agent inside the editor. The download page lists Terminal first, then Desktop, then Extensions.

Undo and share

/undo and /redo revert or restore the last user turn and its file changes. Git is required. /share publishes a session only when you run it.

04 / Adoption

An open coding agent, in public.

More than 195,000 GitHub stars, 950 contributors, and over 13,000 commits. Used by more than 16 million developers each month.

05 / Privacy

Privacy first, by default.

Code and context are not stored, so the agent can run in sensitive environments. The FAQ notes two exceptions. Read the privacy notes →

Default
Code and context are not stored by the service. You can run the agent in environments that cannot leave a remote copy.
Stored
Data is kept when you use the included free models or create a shareable link. Conversations stay private until you run /share.
On disk
Local sessions live under ~/.local/share/opencode or %USERPROFILE%\.local\share\opencode, including auth.json.
Signing
CLI and desktop have been code-signed since v1.3.4. Hash the Windows x64 installer before you exclude anything from antivirus.
06 / Permissions

Allow, ask, or deny.

Since v1.1.1 each rule is allow, ask, or deny. opencode --auto approves asks that are not denied. Plan mode keeps edit and bash off while the model thinks.

external_directory
Fires when a tool leaves the working directory. Default is ask. Expanding ~ does not skip this guard.
doom_loop
Fires when the same tool call repeats three times with identical input. Default is ask.
.env files
read is allow, but *.env and *.env.* default to deny. *.env.example stays allow.
Patterns
File and shell tools can allow git * and deny rm *. Ask prompts offer once, always for the rest of the session, or reject.

07 / FAQ

Direct answers.

An open-source agent that writes and runs code with any AI model. Terminal, desktop, or IDE extension.

Install from the download page, run opencode in a project, then /init. Connect a provider, attach files with @, and use Plan/Build.

Not necessarily. Free models work without an account. You can also connect OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, local models, or Zen.

Yes. The official FAQ names Claude Pro/Max, ChatGPT Plus/Pro, and GitHub Copilot.

No. Desktop covers macOS, Windows, and Linux, plus an IDE extension.

The agent is free and ships free models. A connected provider can add that provider’s charges.

Code and context are not stored by default. Data is stored for included free models or a shareable link. Local sessions live on disk.

Yes. Public source under the MIT License. The project name on GitHub is anomalyco/opencode.

Yes. Desktop publishes win-x64 and win-arm64 installers. Docs still recommend WSL for the terminal path. Desktop needs WebView2. See the WSL guide.

Heuristic engines have labeled first-run temp DLLs as Wacatac or PDM:Trojan.Win32.Generic. Verify the SHA256, prefer the signed v1.18.31 desktop build, and do not switch off Smart App Control. Full steps: antivirus guide.

On Windows PowerShell: Get-FileHash .\opencode-desktop-win-x64.exe -Algorithm SHA256. The v1.18.31 digest is on the integrity section.

08 / Models

Reliable models for coding agents.

Connect a tested set of models for coding agents. Use the included free models, your own keys, Copilot, ChatGPT, or a local runtime — without locking the agent to one vendor.

/connect

Add a provider and paste an API key, or sign in to Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or Zen.

/models

Open the picker. Run opencode models to list what you can call. Models are referenced as provider/model, for example openai/gpt-4.1.

OpenCode Zen

Handpicked models the project tested for coding agents, so provider quality is less of a lottery.

Local models

Connect local models through the same 75+ provider list on Models.dev. Included free models work without an account.
